We are honored to present the 2020 Virginia Gilpin Distinguished Service Award to Mr. David Whitley. David joined Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad (VBVRS) in 1979 and proudly served as an active member for over 36 years. The breadth of David’s service to VB Rescue is extraordinary. Since joining he has served our city as a volunteer paramedic, he also served as Captain of VBVRS a total of 5 terms, longer than anyone in the Squad’s long history. David’s service has not been limited to running duty on the ambulance, he has also served on various committees over the years. This service includes but is not limited to the recruitment and retention of Volunteers for the entire EMS system, serving as the Chairman of the Building Committee for the Station 8 project, providing fundraising assistance to both VBVRS and Sandbridge Rescue Squad, and serving on the Board of Directors for the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad Foundation.

The Virginia Gilpin Distinguished Service Award is presented to an individual whose outstanding actions and activities have helped to strengthen and enhance the volunteer rescue squad system in the City of Virginia Beach, Virginia. The 2021 Award nominations will open soon!
